Nelson Central School

Principal: Paul Potaka, Address: 70 Nile Street, Nelson, Roll: 420, Website: www.nelsoncentral.school.nz Principal's email: tumuaki@ts.co.nz

Nelson Central School is a state primary contributing school located in Nelson city three blocks east of the cathedral. The school was established in 1878 and is confined to a single site. The roll currently ranges between 400-440 with around 50-60 five year old enrolments each year. We enroll New Zealand children who are aged between 5 and 11 years.

The school population is a broad cross-section of the total Nelson socio-economic population. The number of Maori children enrolled at the school is proportionately greater than would be expected given the total Maori population in Nelson city due the presence of two Maori language immersion classes.

Children take part in a curriculum based on the seven essential learning areas as required by the government. This makes for a balanced curriculum in the school. The school also accepts enrolments from international fee paying students and currently has students from Korea, Thailand, USA, UK, Denmark and Switzerland. The upper age limit for international students is negotiable.
